Whitley Awards - 2021

Whitley Awards - 2021 Winners

Birds, beetles, deep sea squid, jelly fish, starfish, wombats and New Zealand mammals have been placed in the spotlight as the Royal Zoological Society of NSW is pleased to announce our prestigious Whitley Awards for zoological literature.

Awarded annually, the Whitley Awards recognise the best publications that profile the unique wildlife of the Australasian region and this year is a very significant one given it is the 50th Anniversary of the Whitleys. These awards are named after Gilbert Whitley, the fish Curator at the Australian Museum for many years (1926-1964) as well as being very active on the Council of the RZS NSW as President and also editor of Australian Zoologist from 1947-1971. He published many scientific papers and so very fitting that these prestigious awards which recognise the best of Australasian zoological literature are named after him.

This year we have awarded 17 Certificate of Commendations in a range of categories including children’s books, zoological reference and handbooks, field guides and periodicals. Of these awards 10 are childrens books representing books suitable for different age groups, and the Society really encourages publishers to submit such books as these readers represent the next generation of zoologists.

Congratulations to all of this years' winners.

Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC,Governor of New South Wales

Special Commendation

Professor Chris R Dickman

Chris Dickman is Professor in Terrestrial Ecology at the University of Sydney, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and a Fellow of the Royal Zoological Society of NSW. His ground-breaking and internationally recognised research has focussed on terrestrial vertebrates, particularly mammals. For the last 30 years Chris’ primary research has focussed on desert environments, looking at community interactions and how this affects population dynamics. Chris’ work has helped establish the Australasian vertebrate fauna as having unique dynamic processes and not simply antipodean parallels of northern hemisphere counterparts. Chris has also been heavily involved in the conservation of the Australian fauna, being the inaugural Chair of the NSW Threatened Species Committee and most recently highlighting the dramatic loss of fauna and habitat during the 2019/2020 fires, the theme for our recent RZS NSW forum. Chris has authored over 544 peer-reviewed articles, including 382 papers in refereed scientific journals, 123 refereed book chapters, 10 authored or co-authored books / monographs, 16 edited or co-edited books and 13 refereed conference proceedings.as well as several books and edited volumes. Through his writing, Chris embodies the intent of the Whitley Awards, namely, to promote the best of writing about Australia’s unique fauna. Chris has in the past been the recipient of several Whitley Awards, including the Whitley Medal. Chris is an outstanding recipient of the Whitley Special Commendation, particularly in the 50th year of the awards.
